teamHermit - Gamified Social Distancing

Designed for the COVID-19 Global Hackathon

During the 2nd week of March 2020, WHO declared the ongoing COVID-19 disease as a pandemic. Within days of the announcement, the COVID-19 Global Hackathon was announced. The challenge: design solutions that drive social impact, with the aim of tackling some of the challenges related to the current coronavirus pandemic.

A few friends and I decided to design an app targeted at a younger crowd and to encourage the importance of staying at home. The idea was simple: having to stay at home because of a virus outbreak can feel downright boring. So we thought, why not help keep our sanity with memes and achievements? We created teamHermit, a mobile app to encourage more people to stay at home and have fun doing it.

Why'd we choose this as a project?

Though staying at home feels like not doing anything, it is actually the most important thing many of us can do right now to support our front-line workers globally. We wanted people to feel like they are contributing to a cause and have a little fun, even as they binge-watch Netflix in their pajamas while "working" from home

On a personal level - I wanted to take this chance to create something more lighthearted and full of humor. My day job involved designing for more "serious" B2B facing applications. Thus, the chance to work on something different was a breath of fresh air for me. I had a ton of fun designing achievement icons and finding funny gifs to include as part of the daily streaks.
